Galicia, Sister Land of Portugal
No. 120 MAY 2022
Did you know that ancient Roman Gallaecia, whose capital was in Braga, constituted a unit until the 12th century and was the origin of the kingdom and the language of Portugal? Since then, the similarity of landscapes, linguistic proximity, intermittent cultural dialogue and the importance of cross-border relations between Galicia and Portugal have remained. This essay discusses the history and culture of Galicia, as well as the historical developments in Portugal and in northern Portugal in particular. It was written based on history, but also as a future focus that allows us to understand that the common identities in Galicia and Portugal could reach a new institutional dimension and gain important regional weight within the framework of the European Union.
