Civil Society
No. 49 SEPTEMBER 2014
A robust civil society is an essential condition for making democracy stronger. Through a reflection on European history, this essay shows how civil society emerged alongside strong states and powerful parliaments, mobilising political parties, and in contexts of social democratic revolution. In a time of corrosion of these institutions by the unregulated market and by technocratic organisations, it is only through the revitalisation of a civil society that gives a voice to the ordinary citizen and groups with less resources will it be possible to defend democracy.
