Although, there has been mass access to school and school utilisation in Portugal has improved in recent decades, the difference in results between the richer and the poorer students remains. This essay looks at teaching in Portugal, relating the investment made in education to the probability of employment and wages in the labour market. It discusses the most urgent issues facing the Portuguese education system and suggests educational policies with a positive impact on student school paths, the disruption of social bubbles and the promotion of equal opportunities.
