Montefiore live: The world today is not that simple

29 min
Watch episode

«We are leaving an exceptional period in history. There are alarming signs of a new world order», where large organisations such as the United Nations are losing both their mediating power and neutrality.

Live from Lisbon, historian and writer Simon Sebag Montefiore, author of «Jerusalem», is the guest of the interview «The world today, it's not that simple».

In this conversation, held at the Aula Magna, the author talks about the Hamas attack on Israel on 7 October and the war it unleashed in Gaza. In his understanding, the solution will have to involve two states and new leaderships, both Palestinian and Israeli.

Montefiore also believes that we are facing a new global order, where continental powers and aspiring superpowers follow their own politics, «play all the games» and challenge the US.

The historian - who has just published a history of humanity, focusing on families throughout different eras and in different geographies - talks about the danger of nuclear proliferation, before turning to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and explaining why he thinks the West should help the Ukrainians resist the invasion.
