Res Publica essay

No. 19 SEPTEMBER 2011

The topical nature of this book is not just the result of the current crisis. It has been known since ancient times that commitment to the public thing requires disinterest and virtue, ethics often contradicted by the true history of mankind. Hence the permanent tension between the ideal and the practical, a backdrop that enables advances and retreats on a path where, between consensus and contradiction, the epic optimism of the human adventure often flows the other way. The book that now comes to light is a synthesis of this journey, with the history of the idea of res publica at its core, as well as its relationships with all the others that fight the things that lead to discretion and servility towards the powers that be and gives rise to the involvement of individuals in civic participation.
