The topical nature of this book is not just the result of the current crisis. It has been known since ancient times that commitment to the public thing requires disinterest and virtue, ethics often contradicted by the true history of mankind. Hence the permanent tension between the ideal and the practical, a backdrop that enables advances and retreats on a path where, between consensus and contradiction, the epic optimism of the human adventure often flows the other way.
