No. 6 SEPTEMBER 2010
What is authority? It is particularly important to know how to answer this difficult question today. The notion of authority has an ancient and complex history. It has known many worlds and faced many enemies. It has already been disputed by heaven and earth, by the past and by the future.
Why, then, study the notion of authority? Contemporary societies have a somewhat ambiguous relationship with authority. On the one hand, they recognise its need and usefulness. On the other hand, they are suspicious of its claims. But what is the place of authority in democratic societies? Is it possible and desirable to reconcile the aspirations of democratic people with authority?
