The Quality of the Air in Portugal

Nº145 JANUARY 2025

Breathe in. Breathe out. Do you know that you do this an average of 25,000 times a day, inhaling 11,000 litres of air? Vital for human beings, air also determines the general state of our health. When polluted, it is our greatest environmental and ecosystem enemy. This essay identifies the main air pollutants and suggests how we can take action against them.

In Portugal, despite the clear reduction in air pollution from industrial sources, there are thousands of premature deaths a year associated with exposure to pollutants in high concentrations, well above what is recommended, especially in urban centres, close to areas with heavy road traffic. We urgently need to make the air we breathe cleaner. This essay explains how and why.
