Difícil é educá-los
Difícil é educá-los

The problem is educating them

No. 5 SEPTEMBER 2010

Based on the awareness of the Portuguese educational lag, the author analyses the different factors that might explain it, focusing on three areas: more education, better education and more social equity. It concludes that the changes in the education system have resulted in an increase in education and national coverage indicators, but it has not been able to achieve the quality levels corresponding to the expectations of the Portuguese. These divergent developments did not provide for more social equity or the expected return on investment. After repositioning the issue of the goals of the education system and the role to be played by the State, the author addresses the difficulties in reform and the urgent need to reflect on the future of education.
