They are now clear signs of degradation in our representative democratic system. Citizens are moving away from political life, losing confidence in political institutions. Electoral abstention and lack of participation are on the rise. Political parties are moving away from citizens and society, and they are becoming more and more tied to the State. Parliament represents society badly and legislates against public opinion. There are problems of government instability. Governments struggle to impose themselves when faced with vested interests. Relations between the Government and the President of Portugal are conflicted. Given the deterioration of democracy, reform is required to enable the regime to be more capable.
