Freedom and Information

No. 21 JANUARY 2012

Freedom of expression and freedom of the press are values which, even formally enshrined as universal human rights, continue to be the subject of heated controversy. Between the tradition of non-intervention by public authorities, which began with the approval of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution and the defence of the need for the watchful eye of regulatory authorities, there are also two schools of thought that are in opposition to each other. At a time when traditional media companies face enormous difficulties and challenges, it is important to defend professional and independent journalism, not least because it plays a central role in balancing the systems of checks and balances and limited government that characterise modern democracies.
