Consumer Society and Consumers in Portugal

No. 128 JANUARY 2023

Portugal came late to the consumer society, but adopted it unequivocally, asymmetrically and in a way that was concentrated along the coast. Since then, the Portuguese have accepted the benefits of a consumer policy, but without engaging in a social movement with effective civic participation, capable, for example, of questioning the decisions of the European Union or responding to environmental and sustainability issues.
This essay outlines the path taken by Portuguese consumers and puts it into context. It takes a close look at the present and warns of the transverse nature of what is known as consumer protection, which is much more than the safeguarding of rights and is based on real engagement in consumer citizenship, where consumers, among a multitude of partners, can act as a guiding light for the common good.
