The Children of Monte Gordo

Nº86 FEBRUARY 2025

Mention has been made of the use of the Monte Gordo beach for around 600 years. This is where this portrait begins, taking us on a voyage of discovery of this place and its people, accompanying the transformation of the fishing village into a seaside resort, with tourism pushing the fishermen from the central part of the town to a periphery of adobe houses and thatched cottages, without running water, drainage systems or streets, in a process of territorial, economic and social marginalisation.

Along the way, there are also stories of the fury of the Marquis of Pombal, the fates of the canning factories, the craze for swimming and sunbathing and tourism accommodation and visits from King Sebastião and Ingrid Bergman. A journey to Monte Gordo, when there were still more seafarers than street cafés and sunshades.
