Blue Economy
No. 117 JANUARY 2022
Portugal is the Sea. Throughout history and through seaside and culinary traditions, but also through what it really represents in our positioning in the world. Lisbon has one of the best oceanariums in the world. Portugal is one of the few countries with a ministry of the sea and was one of the first states to introduce legislation on maritime space management and planning, which became a case study. From an economic point of view, the sea is part of daily life in Portugal: today there is a robust, dynamic and innovative array of maritime activities, aimed at exports, contributing significantly to the GDP and employing tens of thousands of people. This book takes a close look at the blue economy and compares the national situation with that of other countries. It points out the best of what we have at home and what has become a reference abroad. It identifies threats and tries to explain challenges, such as knowledge and sustainability, while at the same time proposing a sea policy for the next decade.
