Multimedia in Science Teaching
This study summarises the main results of research into the place of multimedia in science teaching in Portugal over the last five years. There were two goals behind this work.
The first is of a scientific nature: to portray national research into multimedia in science teaching over the last five years. The other is of an informative nature: to provide the community interested in the subject with a simple reference tool that will allow them to reflect on and improve teaching practices in the scientific areas using new computer technologies. To this end, the authors address issues such as:
- The concept of multimedia and its relevance to science teaching in the context of a changing web;
- The variety of educational multimedia used in science teaching in Portugal;
- The pedagogical integration of technology based on the analysis of empirical evidence;
- Possible measures to improve the use of these tools in teaching in Portugal.
Now we can understand why the integration of multimedia is the subject of discussion and why teaching practices based on it, even among enthusiasts, are often inconsistent. In fact, the choice of whether or not to integrate multimedia into teaching practice involves not only pedagogical and epistemological concepts, but also socio-professional issues arising, for example, from students' academic success, as measured by normative and legal provisions.
