Desertification in Portugal
No. 134 SEPTEMBER 2023
Desertification is a fear that casts a shadow over the future. It has already been identified in vast areas of Mediterranean countries, especially on the Iberian Peninsula. Let there be no doubt about it: the susceptibility of mainland Portugal has increased in direct relation to climate change and the current degree of impact is quite high, on the left bank of the River Guadiana, for example.
This essay puts desertification into context and explains it as a complex environmental phenomenon arising from natural processes and human activities at different scales. It reflects on its effects on soil degradation, water resources and biodiversity and on the risks of depopulation, but, with a view to tomorrow, it points to recovery and prevention strategies.
