Fifty years ago, Portugal had the highest infant mortality rate in Europe. In 1960, around 77 children died for every thousand that were born. In 2010, that figure was just three deaths for every thousand births.

Over the past half-century, Portugal has achieved one of the fastest reductions in infant mortality rates globally and is now a world leader in this area. Maternal mortality has almost disappeared. How did we achieve this? What had to change for us to come in line with the most developed countries today? “Born to live” is a film about this journey.

A documentary made by Joana Pontes for the Fundação Francisco Manuel dos Santos in 2012.
