Trust in Political Institutions

No. 50 JANUARY 2015

What does (dis)trust in political institutions mean? What are political institutions? And why is it important to study and reflect on (dis)trust in political institutions? This essay starts by answering these questions and then delving more deeply into the subject of political distrust in Portugal, in Europe and even in the world. This is explored on the basis of an analysis of a number of institutions (government, parliament, political parties, the judicial system and the European Union), but also more broadly showing the feelings of dissatisfaction, disenchantment and even alienation that tend to make up the scenario of citizens' discomfort in relation to politics. Throughout the text, data, facts and considerations are explored in order to outline a diagnosis for political distrust, and in the end some contributions to a cure for this are suggested.
