Pseudoscience

No. 48 SEPTEMBER 2014

As long as the science is credible, there will always be those who want to sell their ideas, products and services, claiming that they have scientific validity, even if this isn't true. Pseudoscience is everywhere and uses a set of recognisable strategies in an attempt to validate itself. In this essay, some of these strategies are presented, such as the abusive use of apparently scientific language and reference to authority figures (such as specialists and doctors). Science is not based on any of this, but on evidence that can be confirmed. Some tools are proposed to help distinguish science from pseudoscience, but the only antidote to pseudoscience is scientific knowledge.
