Portugal, the Portuguese: A National Identity
No. 29 SEPTEMBER 2012
The goal of this work is the study of the formation and reproduction of the Portuguese national identity. The author argues that the best way to analyse collective identities, such as national ones, is to establish their genealogy. In this essay, history is always present, through the selective reconstitution of key moments and events in the construction of the forms of identification that are signified by the names Portugal – a State, which would be described and experienced as a homeland or nation – and the Portuguese – the collective name for its inhabitants.
