Portugal and Europe: In Figures
No. 39 SEPTEMBER 2013
That famous phrase of the past «proudly alone» has little or nothing to do with Portugal in the present, so when it comes to contemporary Portugal, comparisons with other countries are rarely avoided. The marks of the differences or similarities between «us» and «others» never escape the analyses, even the most neutral or dispassionate. Being «different» is not necessarily negative. In fact, there are differences that can hardly be overcome, which we can call «nature», such as the language, geographical location or history of the country. In addition to these differences in nature, there are others that have to do with the dynamics of society itself. Depending on these dynamics, we talk about convergence or divergence as the indicators become more or less close to a given reference. This book, «Portugal and Europe: In Figures», was built from this comparative perspective. We now propose to look at Portugal’s routes compared to the 26 other countries in the European Union (EU27), regardless of whether they were part of the EU or not at the time.
