The Middle Class: Rise and Fall

No. 23 JANUARY 2012

The middle class is a social segment that has given rise to countless controversies and, in the current austerity framework, is at risk of compulsive impoverishment (especially in the peripheral countries of Europe, such as Portugal). The notion is itself controversial. Either in theoretical terms, because it does not truly correspond to a ""class” as a collective subject or actor with its own identity, or on the concrete plane, insofar as it is a plural group with several social layers situated in the intermediate positions of social stratification, this is a very heterogeneous social category with multiple connotations.

This essay aims to contribute to broad and critical sociological reflection on this subject, showing the multitude of approaches and views on the subject, while at the same time pointing out examples, discussing trends and sharing perplexities that Portuguese society and its middle class are faced with today.
