The Man Who Could See in the Dark, Bruno Candé’s Lisbon

No. 69 FEBRUARY 2023

Bruno Candé was the first person in Portugal whose death resulted in a conviction for murder motivated by racial hatred. The 76-year-old murderer killed out of prejudice against skin colour. The court declared that on 25 July 2020, Candé, 39, an actor and a native of Lisbon, father of three, died due to racism: a word he did not believe in.
This book is a portrait of Bruno Candé, of his life and his legacy to his family, to the city and to Zona J (now Bairro do Condado), where he was born and raised and where he took the theatre to other children and young people. Candé said that, as he’d been born there, «anything could go wrong». «But I am Bruno Candé», he said again shortly afterwards. He was a man who saw in the dark, beyond the stigmas of poverty and racial discrimination.

Book recommended by the National Reading Plan.
