Living Alone

No. 70 FEBRUARY 2023

Never before have so many Portuguese been living alone, either by choice, due to work or study or due to divorce or widowhood. According to the provisional 2021 Census, there are already more than one million people in this situation, twice as many as 30 years ago. The era of communication is, simultaneously and paradoxically, the era of loneliness.
This book is a portrait of loneliness in Portugal in figures, context and circumstances, but also a reflection on how different living alone is from feeling alone. The experience of loneliness is so individual and private that it becomes almost undefinable. As can be read in the accounts of solitary lives exposed throughout this book, living alone can be a privilege, a matter of freedom not to be relinquished or profound and irreversible pain. Loneliness can be since always or forever.
