Lisbon in Metamorphosis
No. 115 SEPTEMBER 2021
Lisbon is a city with a vast historical background and now comprises a large urban region, full of daily life and interdependencies on a wide variety of scales. Its positioning has always been a meandering one, between the centre and the periphery, the cosmopolitan and the local, development and crisis. After five decades of metropolitan mushrooming, it has now gone through a decade of transition. For new and still uncertain times. This essay proposes an analytical and interpretative reflection on the contemporary changes in Lisbon. It looks at the past, the present – in constant motion – and the multiple challenges posed to the city. A productive, social, redistributive and circular economy, cohesive and supportive communities, accessible, qualified and ecological habitats and mobility. Between extraordinary potential and exasperating weaknesses, Lisbon is again going through a metamorphosis.
