Jénifer, or the Princess of France, the (really) unknown islands

No. 68 FEBRUARY 2023

Jénifer is a child in search of a way out and Joel is a man in search of a story. The two meet in a social housing estate in the Azores, the poorest part of Portugal, fertile ground for sexual abuse and incest, alcoholism and domestic violence, social exclusion, drug trafficking, school failure, persistent poverty or youth suicide, as well as many other western underdevelopment indices. Basically, one question: how can Jénifer transcend the misery and poverty of her parents? She has a plan.
This is a portrait of the ignored Azores, a human landscape absent from tourist photographs. It is also an attempt at civic intervention by one man, preaching in the desert of scarcity, exclusion and conformism, and calling for change.

Book recommended by the National Reading Plan.
