O Governo da Justiça
O Governo da Justiça

The Government of Justice

No. 20 SEPTEMBER 2011

This essay talks about the government of justice. Our model for the government of justice In Portugal is wrong. In 1976, Portuguese democracy decided that justice was an issue for judges and jurists. It found an easy formula to relieve itself of accountability, the autonomy of the judiciary. The result is a justice system at risk of breaking, an insufficient democratic rule of law and a lack of a plan for structural reforms. Like any organisation, justice needs an efficient and effective governance system. This cannot and will not happen with the current arrangement. We must change the foundations of the current model of the government of justice. In the medium term, political power must simply abandon the current model of judicial councils.
