Forest Fires in Portugal
No. 108 JANUARY 2021
What do you do when everything, or almost everything, is burning? Every year, Portugal is faced with extensive burnt areas and one of the highest ignition rates in the world, in a context of a trend increase in the number, size and destructive capacity of «big fires». Did you know that at least 257 people died in forest fires between 1961 and 2019 (65 firefighters, seven foreign experts, 25 military personnel, four forest officials and 156 other citizens)? In the current scenario of climate change and in a country without a great culture of self-protection, where, contrary to popular wisdom, it continues to remedy rather than prevent, this book aims to contribute to the dissemination of knowledge in the area of forest fires. It is a very clear warning of a scourge that, without a clear paradigm shift, will only get worse.
