Fisheries in Portugal

No. 83 MAY 2018

Portugal, a paradoxical case: with 1,610 kilometres of coastline, the country is a frequent stage for controversy in the fisheries sector. Whether it is because of quotas or the price of fish; wages or the invasion of foreign boats and fish – the problems seem to have no end in sight. However, what we think is a current issue is actually an imbroglio that started a long time ago. In Portugal, common debate is marred by myths and half-truths about the restrictions placed on fisheries by the European Union, about the golden age of the Estado Novo and the weight that fisheries has lost in the economy and among the people. With contributions from fishermen, shipowners, scientists and policymakers, this is a story of Portuguese fisheries and a picture of the current state of the sector, in an essay that lays the foundations for an urgent and serious debate on fisheries in Portugal.
