Eating Habits of the Portuguese
No. 107 SEPTEMBER 2020
Are we what we eat? And do we eat badly or well? In the past, the eating habits of the Portuguese were characterised mainly by the Mediterranean diet. Nowadays, we are moving further and further away from it, influenced by globalisation processes and by the trend towards highly processed products, with high values of animal origin proteins, as well as excess sugar and salt. The changes in eating habits, in their various phases of acquisition, appropriation and appreciation (and food waste) and the climate crisis have consequences for health and for the planet. This essay gives an overview of this problem and points to some ways of solving it, taking the health crisis resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic into account. Where are we going, considering the way we eat?
Book recommended by the National Reading Plan.
