Discrimination against the Elderly
No. 12 MARCH 2011
The obvious ageing of the population we have seen in recent years has important implications for the European and Portuguese economies. Pressures on the labour market and social protection measures require considerable adjustments, which include the promotion of active ageing policies that enable citizens to live in a healthier and more productive way.
This perspective is not in line with the negative image that prevails in the different spheres of our society and which persists in treating older people as sick and incapable. In this context, one fact is certain: the future of the country must involve a profound ideological change in the way we view ageing and the elderly.
