Death
No. 18 JULY 2011
It's likely that I’ll die in the next ten, fifteen years. I have children and grandchildren, I loved and I was loved, I wrote books, I listened to music and I travelled. I could say I'm content, but that doesn’t help me face death any more easily. If a doctor tells me tomorrow that I’m suffering from an incurable disease, I could have a heart attack, which would obviously solve the problem. But if that doesn’t happen, I want to have the law on my side. I would like the debate on the issues discussed here, living wills, assisted dying and euthanasia, to take place in a serene climate. But we will have to accept discussions with all the opponents, even those who, being fanatics, are the most repulsive to us. Make no mistake: it is urgent that these problems be analysed.
