Luís Maria Viana Palha da Silva was born in 1956. In 1978, he completed his degree in Economics at Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão de Lisboa and, in 1981, his degree in Company Management at Universidade Católica Portuguesa de Lisboa. Between 1985 and 1992, he was an assistant at Universidade Católica, taking on a number of management duties from 1987 at a number of different companies, including Covina, SEFIS, EGF, CELBI, SOGEFI and IPE. He worked as Secretary of State for Commerce between 1992 and 1995 and as Director of Cimpor between 1996 and 2001. He became a Member of the Board of Grupo Jerónimo Martins in June 2001, taking on the position of Chief Financial Officer. Since 27th April, 2004, Luís Palha has been Chairman of the Executive Commission of Grupo Jerónimo Martins
