The concept of representation is intrinsically linked to the idea of democracy. However, its gradual implementation has produced harmful side effects: a distancing of citizens from the political process, the domination of party machines over the «republic» and the subordination of the public interest to private interests.
Is it possible to rethink the concept of representation beyond its more traditional meaning and equip it with instruments that allow for broad and effective popular participation? Can «deliberative democracy» be the axis around which this transformation gravitates?
