To learn, why and for what? For decades we have been discussing what we expect from our education system and whether it can be improved. This essay returns to the subject, but from the scientific developments that can help education, in the field of cognitive sciences, statistical studies, the economics of education and international comparative analyses.

In these pages, an ambitious curriculum is advocated, centred on knowledge rather than vague skills. This essay explains the need for valid, frequent and rigorous evaluation and advocates support for the students who show the greatest difficulties. Teachers and learning are praised. It is possible to move towards teaching informed by experience, data and science, because the love of knowledge still lives among us.
