Professor of Mathematics at the University of Coimbra. He was Secretary of State for Higher Education between 2011 and 2013, President of the Mathematics Centre at the University of Coimbra and a member of the board of the International Linear Algebra Society. He is an associate editor for three international mathematical research journals. He has written several articles and books on mathematical research, the history of mathematics and educational policies in Portugal.

He has a PhD in History from the Lusíada University of Lisbon and he is a researcher at the Institute of Medieval Studies at the Nova School of Social and Human Sciences, where he also teaches on the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree courses.
His research focuses on the use of heraldic images as a form of self-representation and social and political communication, from a diachronic perspective from the Middle Ages to the Contemporary Age.
He has taken part in several funded research projects and coordinated the project «In the Service of the Crown. The Use of Heraldry in Royal Political Communication in Late Medieval Portugal».
He has more than a hundred publications in the area of heraldry and his latest books include: «Heraldry in Contact: Perspectives and Challenges of a Connective Image Form» (2023), «State-Rooms of Royal and Princely Palaces, 14th-16th Centuries: Spaces, Images, Rituals» (2022), «Devises, lettres, chiffres et couleurs: un code emblématique, 1350-1550» (2022), and «Shields and Castles, Signs of Portugal» (2019) and «Emblems of Portugal» (2024), the last two published by Fundação Francisco Manuel dos Santos.

She is a journalist. She started on local radio and in newspapers, working for the Público newspaper since 2005. In 2014, inspired by the connections between her municipality (Ílhavo) and cod fishing, she launched her first book, «Till the Sea Do Us Part». She was born in 1976, grew up near the river and it is also near its banks, in the place that Eça de Queiros described as «one of the most delicious spots on the globe», where she lives.

Born in Rio de Moinhos – Aljustrel in 1952, he went to secondary school in Aljustrel, Faro and Lisbon, where he lived (in Moscavide), worked and studied from the age of 16. He went to ISCTE-IUL from 1981 to 1985, when he completed his Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and joined the University of Coimbra School of Economics as an assistant, before also joining the team at the Centre for Social Studies in the same university. Since then, he has taught, done research and published on subjects such as classes and social inequalities, the sociology of business and labour relations, trade unionism, youth and social movements. He got his PhD at the University of Coimbra in 1999, with a thesis on the footwear industry, based on participant observation in a factory in the sector (published under the title Between the Factory and the Community, published by Afrontamento, 2000).
