Daniel Ziblatt: Democracy is not that simple

29 min
Watch episode

Is democracy dying? What challenges does it face today? And how can it overcome them? To answer these questions, Pedro Pinto interviews Harvard University professor and democracy expert Daniel Ziblatt in this episode of «It's Not That Simple».

In this conversation, the author of How Democracies Die, a New York Times bestseller, talks about the warning signs that democracy is under threat, not from a coup d'état, but from authoritarian politicians who «undermine» its foundations from power.

Ziblatt also supply examples of countries where democracy is in good health. He also looks at the impact of Russia's war against Ukraine on the world's democracies and what might happen in the future. Ziblatt also discusses the failed attempts - in the US and Brazil - to overturn the result of their presidential elections, and what these attempts tell us about the future of democracy.

Finally, Ziblatt looks at Portugal and the rise of the populist far right, discussing how the main parties in Western democracies can deal with this threat, in a scintillating conversation.
