History was made in 1960 when, at the age of six, Ruby Bridges became the first African-American child to enrol at William Frantz Elementary – a school that, until then, had been exclusively for whites only.
The image of Ruby entering the school flanked by four federal police officers was immortalised by Norman Rockwell in the painting «The Problem We All Live With». It became one of the most powerful symbols of the struggle for civil rights and for integrated and equal education for all children.
